The G20, consisting of the world’s largest economies, will hold its annual heads of state or government summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2023. Brazil will assume the rotating presidency of the G20 from India on December 1, 2022.
The summit is scheduled for November 18 and 19, making it the largest event in Rio de Janeiro since the city hosted the Olympics in 2016 and the World Cup final in 2014. The G20 represents a significant portion of the global economy, trade, and population, accounting for around 85% of global GDP, over 75% of global trade, and about two-thirds of the world’s population.
Established two decades ago, the G20 initially aimed to include important emerging economies in discussions previously limited to the Group of Seven industrialized economies. Following the 2007-2008 financial crisis, the G20 emerged as the primary forum for international economic and financial cooperation, organizing summits of finance ministers and central bank governors.
