The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), a United Nations regional commission, serves as a vital platform for collaboration among its 53 member states and 9 associate members in addressing sustainable development challenges.
Since its inception post-World War II, initially, as the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE), ESCAP has evolved to encompass a broader mandate, reflected in its current headquarters in Bangkok and expanded the scope of work.
Over the decades, ESCAP has facilitated regional economic growth through initiatives like the Trans-Asian Railway and the Bangkok Declaration on Regional Economic Cooperation and Integration. It has also addressed pressing social issues such as gender parity, ageing, and environmental sustainability, adapting to the region’s changing needs.
ESCAP’s engagement remains critical amid contemporary challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, income inequality, and climate change. Guided by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, ESCAP continues to support the region in building resilience, fostering inclusivity, and pursuing a future-oriented development trajectory
