The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS) drew over 5,500 participants, predominantly STEM students from community colleges and universities, along with researchers, program directors, and administrators.
Launched by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) with support from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, ABRCMS aims to bolster STEM education and careers. Notably, its “exhibit hall” exclusively features recruiters from graduate programs, offering students crucial networking opportunities.
The 2023 event boasted 1,000 representatives from various universities. With 104 sessions, including workshops and expert lectures, ABRCMS provides robust professional development. A highlight was the closing keynote panel comprising successful ABRCMS alumni now in leadership roles, illustrating the conference’s impact on career trajectories. As Irene V. Hulede, ASM’s director of education, noted, the longevity of ABRCMS has empowered former attendees to return as keynote speakers, sharing their journeys and inspiring the next generation of scientists.
