Antwerp has been chosen to host the World Tunnel Congress (WTC) 2027 from April 23 to April 29, marking the first time the event will be held in Belgium.
The announcement was made at the 2024 World Tunnel Congress in Shenzhen, China. The Belgian Tunnel Association (ABTUS-BVOTS) and the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) will organise the event, with AIM Group Belgium as the Professional Congress Organizer (PCO).
WTC 2027 will gather over 2,700 experts, researchers, policymakers, and companies from fields such as civil engineering, construction, transportation, and infrastructure. Participants will exchange knowledge, showcase innovations, and discuss the future of tunnelling and underground technology.
Tadeja Pivc Coudyser, CEO of Antwerp Convention Bureau, expressed excitement about hosting the event, emphasizing Antwerp’s strategic importance in the industry and the effectiveness of its Convention Bureau. The Bureau aims to integrate the city’s vibrancy and cultural richness into the congress, making the entire city a venue for professional and urban hospitality.
Arnold Dix, President of ITA, praised Belgium’s blend of historical heritage, modern technology, and innovative engineering, expressing confidence that the event will advance underground construction worldwide. Johan Mignon and Bart De Pauw of ABTUS-BVOTS highlighted the significance of the Oosterweel project and other underground infrastructure projects in Belgium’s candidacy.
Antwerp’s Deputy Mayor Koen Kennis expressed pride in hosting WTC 2027, noting it aligns with the city’s vision of being a prime destination for international events and showcasing Antwerp’s readiness and capability for large-scale gatherings. The congress will coincide with major roadworks in the city, further emphasizing Antwerp’s commitment to progress and innovation.
