The Cairns Convention Centre will host over 500 scientists and experts for the XVIth Quark Confinement and the Hadron Spectrum Conference from August 19 to 24, 2024. This important event, organised by the Centre for the Subatomic Structure of Matter at the University of Adelaide, has been a key gathering for scientists studying strong interactions since it started in 1994 in Como, Italy. The Cairns event is the sixteenth in this influential series, fostering discussions among theorists, experimentalists, and professionals from related fields.
The Cairns Convention Centre was selected for its strong connections with the scientific community and its excellent facilities, including a recent AUD$176 million expansion, adding 10,500 square meters of new space. Attendees will also experience Cairns’ unique culture, heritage, and natural beauty, which inspire scientific creativity.
The conference aims to bring together experts to tackle fundamental questions in particle physics, focusing on understanding the universe’s smallest components. Topics include lattice QCD, perturbative QCD, QCD vacuum models, QCD phenomenology, and experimental physics. Additionally, it will explore the connections between QCD, nuclear physics, astrophysics, and other strongly coupled physics areas, emphasising the interaction between QCD and condensed matter physics.
Janet Hamilton, General Manager of Cairns Convention Centre, noted that hosting this prestigious conference soon after their expansion showcases the venue’s dedication to knowledge sharing and education. Dr Ayse Kizilersu from the University of Adelaide, leading the event organisation, expressed excitement about bringing the conference to Cairns, highlighting the venue’s appeal and anticipating a high turnout from the global scientific community.
