In a recent workshop organized by the Joplin Convention and Visitors Bureau at City Hall, community officials, and area attractions were reminded of the immense potential of cultural heritage tourism. The session aimed to foster the growth and utilization of local attractions, paving the way for a more prosperous future.
Leading the forum was W. Arthur Mehrhoff, an accomplished city designer, and former academic manager at the University of Missouri for the Museum of Art and Archaeology. With a wealth of experience in promoting Missouri’s heritage through initiatives like DREAM, the Missouri River Communities Network, and the Missouri Humanities Council, Mehrhoff emphasized the significance of cultural heritage in shaping the identity and charm of communities.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation defines heritage tourism as a means to explore and appreciate the local stories, people, and artifacts of the past and present. The workshop’s participants learned that cultural heritage tourism holds great appeal for both international and local travelers, making it a powerful tool for community development.
