Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) introduced the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp, a new initiative to recognize hotels that adhere to the city’s sustainability requirements. Apparently, this move is part of DET’s commitment to establish Dubai as a leading sustainable tourism destination.
Starting on August 3, 2023, hotel establishments can be nominated for the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp until August 31, 2023. The stamp is divided into three tiers: gold, silver, and bronze. Hotels of all categories ought to meet high standards in areas like energy and water efficiency, waste management programs, and staff education on sustainability to earn the stamp.
A committee of senior industry professionals will oversee the accreditation process to ensure integrity and independence based on global best practices. Yousuf Lootah, acting CEO of Corporate Strategy and Performance at DET, emphasized the initiative’s aim to reward hotels excelling in sustainable practices and to encourage others to follow suit, benefiting both their businesses and the city’s well-being.
DET’s sustainability strategy includes the Carbon Calculator, which helps stakeholders identify cost-saving opportunities and transition to sustainable practices.
Also, Dubai Can, DET’s other initiative, focuses on promoting reusable bottles and refilling options to reduce single-use plastic water bottle consumption. Since its launch in February 2022, ‘Dubai Can’ has eliminated the use of over 10 million 500-ml single-use plastic water bottles and installed 50 water fountains throughout the city.
