The G20 Leaders’ Summit held in Delhi showcased India’s leadership in promoting global unity and collaboration among the world’s most influential leaders. The summit brought together leaders with a shared vision for the future and a collective commitment to addressing global challenges through cooperation.
One significant achievement of the summit was the unanimous endorsement of the pivotal role of tourism and culture in sustainable socio-economic development and prosperity. The ‘G20 Leaders Declaration’ adopted during the summit emphasized the importance of the ‘Goa Roadmap for Tourism’ as a means to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The ‘GOA Roadmap,’ a key deliverable of India’s G20 Tourism Track, serves as a blueprint for sustainable global tourism. Aligned with India’s G20 Presidency theme, it highlights tourism’s role in society, the economy, and environmental stewardship. The roadmap focuses on five priorities: Green Tourism, Digitalization, Skills, Tourism Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), and Destination Management, offering a comprehensive strategy for aligning tourism policies with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030.
The Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), has launched the G20 Tourism and SDG Dashboard, aiming to showcase sustainable tourism practices and policies from G20 nations as a global repository of best practices.
Additionally, the summit noted the launch of the “Travel for LiFE” initiative, aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision of “LiFE” (Lifestyle for Environment), promoting responsible and sustainable tourism. The initiative encourages tourists and tourist businesses to take simple actions for environmental protection and climate action.
The Ministry of Tourism envisions a greener, cleaner, and harmonious future and aims to transform host cities of G20 Meetings in India into global MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) destinations. Their commitment to fostering sustainable tourism practices reflects their dedication to robust, equitable, and sustainable growth for all.
