India is set to host the World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly (WTSA) in New Delhi from October 15 to 24, 2024. Union Communication & IT Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced this significant event during a press conference, highlighting its importance for advancing 5G and 6G networks.
The WTSA, occurring every four years, guides ITU-T’s future studies, crucial within the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a UN agency. Vaishnaw, speaking at the India Mobile Congress 2023, emphasized India’s global tech role and its commitment to telecom standards.
Notably, ITU recognized India’s indigenous 5Gi standards for 5G. Vaishnaw also praised India’s transformation from a mobile phone importer to an exporter, citing Rs 90,000 crore in exports in 2021.
Moreover, Vaishnaw signed a host country agreement with ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao in 2022, establishing an ITU Area Office and Innovation Center in New Delhi and providing a legal framework for its operations.
