India assumed the presidency of the G20 forum on December 1, 2022, taking over from Indonesia. With a focus on the theme, “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” India aims to promote a shared global future through initiatives like the Amrit Kaal initiative and the LiFE movement, emphasizing environmentally-conscious practices and sustainable living. India, the largest democracy and one of the fastest-growing economies globally, has outlined six thematic priorities for its G20 presidency:
– Green Development, Climate Finance & LiFE: India will address climate change, focusing on climate finance, technology, and just energy transitions for developing nations. The LiFE movement promotes environmentally-conscious practices.
– Accelerated, Inclusive & Resilient Growth: India aims to bring structural transformation, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises in global trade, promoting labor rights, addressing skills gaps, and creating inclusive agricultural value chains.
– Accelerating Progress on SDGs: India will reaffirm its commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly addressing the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact.
– Technological Transformation & Digital Public Infrastructure: The nation will promote a human-centric approach to technology and encourage knowledge-sharing in areas like digital public infrastructure, financial inclusion, and tech-enabled development.
– Multilateral Institutions for the 21st Century: India seeks to reform multilateralism to create a more accountable, inclusive, and representative international system capable of addressing 21st-century challenges.
– Women-led Development: Emphasis will be placed on inclusive growth and development, with a focus on women’s empowerment and representation to boost socio-economic development and SDG achievement.
India will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit in September 2023, with a troika consisting of Indonesia, Brazil, and India overseeing G20 proceedings throughout the year. The presidency will also mark the beginning of “Amritkaal,” a 25-year period leading up to the centenary of India’s independence, focusing on development and sustainability.
