Japan’s tourism industry continues to recover as the country welcomed more than 2 million visitors for the third consecutive month in August. The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) revealed that 2.16 million foreign visitors arrived in August, equivalent to 85.6% of the levels seen in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in global travel restrictions.
Japan’s tourism industry faced a nearly two-year hiatus during the pandemic. The recovery is attributed to several factors, including increased international flights and a weak yen, making trips to Japan more affordable. Notably, travellers from the United States, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East have already surpassed pre-pandemic levels, helping offset the reduced number of Chinese tourists.
Although the number of Chinese visitors increased by 16% in August compared to the previous month, it remains below 2019 levels. However, the recent lifting of Beijing’s restrictions on group travel to Japan is expected to bolster Chinese visitor spending, which historically accounted for a significant portion of all visitors and tourist spending in Japan.
