The M20 Media Freedom Summit, an online gathering of editors and journalists representing most G20 countries, convened on September 6 to address the pressing issues confronting media outlets in their respective regions. Organized by an 11-member committee of Indian editors and a former Supreme Court judge, the summit aimed to highlight shared concerns and convey to G20 leaders, who were convening in New Delhi for their annual summit on September 9-10, the vital importance of press freedom.
Siddharth Varadarajan, a founding editor of The Wire and convener of the organizing committee, emphasized the necessity of the M20 Summit due to the lack of priority given to media freedom by both the host government and many G20 members. He stressed that despite common challenges such as repression, misuse of laws to criminalize journalism, intrusive surveillance through spyware, a struggling media business model, the proliferation of fake news, and the impact of AI, G20 governments appeared disinterested in addressing media freedom.
The M20 Summit sought to not only facilitate conversations among media professionals but also send a clear message to address the problems they face, which is essential for the G20’s efforts to resolve broader issues.
