The events industry in Maastricht is actively embracing sustainability, driven by the city’s desire to showcase its eco-friendly practices to event organizers. The Maastricht Convention Bureau conducted research to explore how local entrepreneurs in the events sector are adopting sustainability initiatives. They found a strong correlation between these local efforts and global sustainability trends within the meeting industry.
The research identified four Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that particularly resonate with Maastricht: decent work and economic growth; sustainable cities and communities; responsible production and consumption; and partnerships for the goals. This alignment with global SDG research by the Joint Meeting Industry Council emphasizes the genuine commitment to sustainability in the events industry.
To further champion sustainability, the Maastricht Convention Bureau created a documentary titled ‘Maastricht Goes Green.’ This video highlights the sustainable initiatives of local industry members like Château St. Gerlach, MECC Maastricht, EDEN Design Hotels, and Hotel van der Valk Maastricht. The documentary offers insights into their practices concerning local sourcing, waste management, energy reduction, decent work policies, and community building, aiming to share their eco-friendly endeavors with a wider audience.
