The 44th Rolex Middle Sea Race, hosted in Malta, commenced on October 21, 2023, in the historic Grand Harbour of Valletta. The renowned race attracted over 100 yachts from 26 nations, featuring elite mariners on cutting-edge vessels. Originating in a friendly rivalry between members of the Royal Malta Yacht Club and British sailor Jimmy White in 1968, the race has evolved into a global spectacle.
The 606 nautical mile course took participants from Valletta to Sicily’s Eastern coast, through the Strait of Messina, to the Aeolian Islands, and past the active volcano of Stromboli. Returning via Lampedusa and Pantelleria, the race celebrated Malta’s maritime heritage. Maltese yachts, particularly the Podesta siblings on Elusive II, have dominated recent editions, winning in 2020 and 2021.
The event, described by Race Director Georges Bonello DuPuis as a celebration of unity, showcased diverse cultures and backgrounds. Notable participants included the Spirit of Malouen X and the U.S.-based Pyewacket 70, continuing the legacy of offshore racer Roy P. Disney.
