The Karnataka government is taking steps to revive its tourism sector by capitalizing on the development of new airports across the state. They plan to promote tourism by establishing five circuits, including the South Karnataka circuit, north Karnataka Circuit, coastal circuit, Kalyana Karnataka circuit, and Kittur Karnataka circuit. These circuits will be strategically connected to airports and airstrips that are under construction or proposed.
For instance, the upcoming Hassan airport will provide easy access to UNESCO heritage sites like Belur and Halebid. Nandi Hills is being developed as a tourist destination, offering quick getaways for travellers to Bengaluru. The Kalaburagi Airport, Ballari Airstrip upgrade, and Raichur Airport will benefit the Kalyana-Karnataka region’s economy.
The Kodagu airstrip and Shivamogga airport will facilitate nature and adventure-based tourism activities. The state’s new tourism policy is expected to outline these plans, focusing on providing direct access to tourist destinations. Kapil Mohan, the additional chief secretary of tourism, believes that the new airports will enhance connectivity to heritage and religious sites, opening up opportunities for domestic and international tourism in Karnataka.
