Laoniuwan village, strategically located at the confluence of the Great Wall and the Yellow River in China’s Shanxi province, has witnessed a tourism renaissance following the construction of the Yellow River No.1 Tourist Highway in 2018. This scenic highway, designed to connect picturesque spots along the Yellow River, has transformed Laoniuwan into a sought-after tourist destination. With a surge of 78 per cent in visitors since the beginning of the year, totaling 121,600 tourists and generating 6.51 million yuan in revenue, the village has become a thriving hub for tourism.
Laoniuwan offers diverse attractions, including exploration of an ancient castle, the scenic beauty of the Yellow River, and unique overnight accommodations in cave dwellings with traditional “Kang” beds. The majority of families in the village now operate homestays, turning tourism into a significant source of income. Guo Jianhua, a villager, highlights the positive impact, noting how he overcame poverty and improved his quality of life by establishing a hostel with the help of poverty alleviation loans.
Further south along the Yellow River No.1 Tourist Highway, in Xingxian County, a growing number of self-driving tourists contribute to the region’s prosperity. Emerging businesses, like the Zhangjiawan recreational vehicle (RV) camp, have seen substantial success, welcoming over 10,000 vehicles since its opening in September 2022. This influx of visitors has not only revitalized local villages but also boosted the sale of local products. Authorities, such as Yao Xiaoyun from Yonghe County, are committed to ensuring that both communities along the river benefit from the tourism industry’s development.
