Singapore has made significant strides in sustainable tourism, ranking 17th in the 2023 Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) Index, jumping 18 places from the previous year. The GDS-Movement CEO, Guy Bigwood, praised Singapore’s rapid progress and named it a finalist in the ‘Most Improved Destination’ category. In the Asia-Pacific region, Singapore was among seven cities in the top 40, alongside Goyang (14th), Songkhla (23rd), Melbourne (27th), Sydney (29th), Bangkok (35th), and Brisbane (37th).
Goyang, in South Korea, emerged as the regional leader, followed by Singapore. In the category of leaders, Goyang ranked third for destination management. The GDS Index included 100 destinations in 2023, with 42 newcomers from 11 countries, including Kumamoto and Takamatsu in Japan and Songkhla in Thailand.
Gothenburg topped the overall index for the seventh time, with Nordic countries dominating the top ten. Sydney, represented by Business Events Sydney, won the GDS-Movement and #MEET4IMPACT Award for positive legacy and impact through business events
