Sustainability in MICE: Insights from a DMC CEO on Green Practices

by Events_India

Indonesia’s travel and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry is increasingly prioritizing sustainability, driven by both government support and the changing landscape of the post-pandemic world. Budi Tirtawisata, CEO of Panorama Group based in Jakarta, notes a growing consensus within the industry on the importance of sustainability. The Indonesian government has ramped up its backing for sustainable tourism, launching campaigns like “Every Step Matters” for foreign tourists and “Kita Mulai Sekarang” (We Start Now) for domestic travellers to raise awareness about the impact of climate change on tourism.

Panorama Group, a prominent DMC in Indonesia, has long been committed to environmentally friendly tourism practices and adheres to sustainable standards recognized by the United Nations World Tourism Organization. They are also making it a priority to address sustainability concerns for international partners handling incentive and meeting groups, as this has become a sought-after value proposition by their global counterparts.

The DMC is actively advocating for supply chain emission reduction and has plans for this in the coming years. Their hotel management arm, overseeing 101 hotels, has implemented energy-efficient measures, such as LED lighting and heat pump water heaters, to reduce energy consumption. Comprehensive waste management practices and green hotel certifications in select properties further demonstrate their dedication to sustainability.

The MICE business in Indonesia has been gaining momentum since the start of 2023, with forward bookings secured for Q4 2023 and 2024. Indonesia has successfully hosted notable international events, including the G20 Bali Summit and the ASEAN Summit in Jakarta. Bali and Jakarta continue to be favoured MICE destinations due to their well-developed infrastructure, accessibility, affordable airfare, and an array of tourist attractions.

Panorama’s partnership with Japan Travel Bureau is also opening up new opportunities, as Japanese corporations with investments in Indonesia consider incentive travel within the country. Overall, Indonesia’s travel and MICE industries are increasingly aligning with sustainability as a national priority while enjoying a resurgence in business.
