Taiwan has announced plans to allow Chinese tourists and businesspeople to visit the island once again from September 1. This move aims to resume exchanges that were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and extend an olive branch to Beijing.
China gradually allowed its nationals to visit various tourist destinations, except Taiwan which was excluded from the list since 2019 due to escalating tensions between the two sides.
According to Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, businesspeople from China can apply for short-term visits, including attending exhibitions, starting from September 1. Additionally, Chinese residents in third countries will be permitted to visit Taiwan as tourists.
The number of tour group arrivals from China will be capped at 2,000 per day, with the actual start date depending on the Chinese government’s response. Taiwan, known for its tech-oriented economy and attractions, has been actively trying to improve relations with China, starting with less contentious issues like tourism, despite China’s reluctance to reciprocate.
