Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is looking to attract Indian tourists to boost Thailand’s tourism industry, following the recent announcement of visa waivers for travelers from China and Kazakhstan. Srettha plans to visit India this year to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discuss increasing flight frequency between the two countries, with a focus on expanding services by Thai Airways International PCL.
Currently, there are limited incoming flights from India to Thailand due to political policies aimed at maintaining capacity parity between carriers from both countries. Srettha’s visit aims to address these issues and create opportunities for more Indian tourists to explore Thailand’s popular destinations.
To further boost Indian tourist arrivals, Thailand may consider offering tax exemptions on jewellery imported for Indian weddings held in the country, as it is a favoured destination for such ceremonies.
Chiang Mai Airport is expanding its operating hours to accommodate the influx of visitors, signaling Thailand’s commitment to reviving its tourism sector and achieving pre-pandemic tourism revenue levels. The country has already welcomed 18.5 million foreign tourists this year, with an expected 28 million by year-end, aiming to reach 3.1 trillion baht in tourism revenue by 2024.
