The QEII Centre, a prominent events venue in London, has embarked on a sustainability journey despite being originally constructed without such considerations. Head of Marketing and Communications, James Bogle, outlines their top five sustainability practices ahead of Earth Day 2024:
- Planet vs Plastics: The centre has eliminated single-use plastics, opting for reusable and recyclable alternatives, reducing non-biodegradable waste significantly.
- Planet-friendly Catering: QEII Taste, the in-house catering company, emphasizes sustainability by offering a 50% plant-based menu, removing beef, utilizing local and seasonal produce, and aiming to reduce food waste by 75%.
- Busy Bees: Partnering with BeesMax, QEII Centre hosts beehives, contributing to honeybee conservation, rewilding efforts, and honey production.
- Wish You Were Here: Encouraging the use of public transport, providing virtual tours, and offering bicycle racks for employees minimize environmental impact from travel.
- Powered Up: Implementing energy-efficient measures such as LED lighting and motion-sensitive taps and toilets to reduce energy consumption across the 7,000 square meters of space.
Despite recognizing ongoing challenges, the QEII Centre celebrates its progress towards net zero emissions. By leveraging its strengths, taking risks, and influencing change, the venue has inspired clients to embark on their own sustainability journeys. Through these efforts, the centre aims to mitigate its environmental footprint while continuing to host successful events.
