The United Nations Assembly approved a draft resolution outlining plans for the “2025 United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14.”
The event will take place in France in June 2025 and be co-hosted by the governments of Costa Rica and France. This conference will address the conservation and sustainable utilization of oceans, seas, and marine resources through discussions on plastic pollution, biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction, deep-sea mining, and commitments from over 100 countries to protect at least 30% of marine areas by 2030.
The representative of Costa Rica highlighted the urgent challenges facing oceans, including rising sea levels and coastal erosion, which are impacting island nations and coastal communities. To effectively address these challenges, the conference is expected to provide a platform for reviewing key processes requiring political will and engagement.
Moreover, the event will assess progress related to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), aiming to reverse the decline of the ocean system and promote sustainable development through enhanced scientific knowledge and partnerships.
The resolution further outlines that all conference costs, including preparations, will be funded through extrabudgetary resources. The 2025 UN Ocean Conference will follow a high-level themed event in Costa Rica in June 2024 and is anticipated to build on the momentum established during previous ocean conferences.
This initiative is set to play a vital role in fostering international cooperation, generating scientific knowledge, and implementing concrete solutions to safeguard oceans and marine resources for future generations.
