The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has unveiled its Best Tourism Villages for 2023, recognizing villages that prioritize rural development, landscape preservation, cultural diversity, local values, and culinary traditions.
Selected during the UNWTO General Assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, 54 villages were chosen out of nearly 260 applications for this third edition, and an additional 20 villages joined the Upgrade Programme. All 74 villages are now part of the UNWTO Best Tourism Villages Network.
The initiative, launched in 2021, is part of the UNWTO Tourism for Rural Development Programme, aiming to foster rural development, combat depopulation, encourage innovation through tourism, and promote sustainable practices. Villages are evaluated across nine key areas, including cultural and natural resources, economic and social sustainability, environmental sustainability, and governance.
