Business Events Wellington has been actively targeting associations in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region with New Zealand members over the past 18 months. The organization has been promoting Wellington and the newly opened Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre to its top APAC targets. Sales calls have also been made in Singapore, with plans to revisit the region later in the year and participate in The Meetings Show in Singapore in 2024.
The Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre, which opened in June 2023, is the city’s largest infrastructure investment since the Wellington Regional Stadium 20 years ago. It has already secured the 36th International Symposium on Superconductivity (ISS2023), marking the first time the conference will be held outside of Japan. This event provides an excellent opportunity to showcase Wellington and the new convention centre to delegates from the Asian market.
Wellington’s appeal to meeting planners lies in its numerous research centres and universities, particularly in fields like computer science, medical oncology, science, and creative technology. The city’s proximity to government agencies and national associations is also a key factor in its popularity for hosting conferences. The new convention centre, located in the heart of the city, offers flexible spaces suitable for conferences of up to 1,600 delegates, further enhancing Wellington’s status as a premier conference destination.
