The International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW), founded in 1928, is a global organization representing social work education and advancing the profession’s values. Originating from the first International Conference of Social Work in Paris, IASSW also led to the creation of two partner bodies, the International Council on Social Welfare (ICSW) and the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW).
The organization initially focused on promoting idea exchange, documenting social work education, and organizing conferences, missions it continues today. By the late 1930s, IASSW’s membership expanded to 75 institutions across 18 countries.
IASSW fosters educational excellence through biennial conferences, a journal (International Social Work), international seminars, and small grants promoting cross-border collaboration. Its influence in establishing social work schools, notably in China, exemplifies its mission-driven outreach.
With a vision of global excellence in social work education, research, and scholarship, IASSW strives for a more equitable world by engaging educators and supporting resource exchange. Its mission emphasizes representing global social work education, building a community of educators, supporting research, and advocating for policies fostering social justice.
