The World Medical Association (WMA) is an international organisation representing physicians, established on 17 September 1947 by physicians from 27 countries during its first General Assembly in Paris. Its primary aim is to maintain physicians’ independence and uphold the highest standards of ethical behaviour and care, especially significant post-World War II. The WMA now comprises 114 National Medical Associations, funded by their annual contributions.
The WMA provides a platform for member associations to communicate, cooperate, and achieve consensus on medical ethics and professional competence, promoting physicians’ professional freedom globally. Its mission is to serve humanity by striving for the highest international standards in medical education, science, art, ethics, and healthcare.
The WMA offers ethical guidance to physicians through Declarations, Resolutions, and Statements covering diverse topics like medical ethics, patient rights, human subject research, care in armed conflicts, drug use, family planning, and pollution. It also focuses on health-related human rights, continuous medical education, healthcare human resources planning, patient safety, public health policies, democracy building for new medical associations, leadership and career development, advocacy, and occupational health and safety.
The WMA collaborates with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other health professional associations and agencies to enhance global healthcare standards. Notably, the World Health Professions Alliance combines efforts from international associations of physicians, nurses, and pharmacists.
The WMA’s main decision-making body is the General Assembly, which meets annually and includes delegations from National Member Associations and WMA officials. The WMA Council, elected biennially by Constituent Members, represents seven global regions. The Chairperson, elected biennially, is the political head, while the President, elected annually, serves as the Ceremonial Head. The Secretary-General, a full-time position, oversees the operational units from the WMA Secretariat in Ferney-Voltaire, France. The WMA Council meets biannually, with additional conferences and seminars to promote international medical collaboration.
