India International Convention Centre, rechristened as Yashobhoomi, was designed by Dikshu C Kukreja of CP Kukreja Architects. Yashobhoomi is a massive facility that surpasses the Bharat Mandapam at Pragati Maidan in terms of physical dimensions and convention capacity.
It spans over 225 acres in Dwarka Sector 25, while Pragati Maidan covers 125 acres. It can accommodate up to 10,000 people, making it one of the largest convention facilities globally and the third-largest in the world.
Yashobhoomi features five large exhibition halls, with two already open in the first phase. The remaining three will open in subsequent phases. It is envisioned as a fully integrated convention and exhibition space, with plans for a hospitality and retail district within the complex, boasting multiple hotels offering around 5,000 rooms.
One of its unique features is its connectivity, including an underground metro terminal connected to the airport express metro, offering convenience and bypassing heavy road traffic.
The architectural design draws inspiration from Indian art and architecture, incorporating elements such as step wells, ‘jalis’ for heat control, and a mix of covered and semi-covered outdoor spaces to suit Delhi’s extreme climate conditions. Notably, the venue boasts the world’s largest LED facade, covering 1 lakh sqft, enabling large gatherings and events.
Future phases of the project will include an indoor arena with a retractable roof capable of accommodating 20,000 people. Yashobhoomi is expected to enhance India’s ability to host major trade expositions and conferences, potentially boosting the country’s economy and tourism sector.
