Leaders from the world’s largest economies, including President Joe Biden, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, President Emmanuel Macron, Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, are gathering in New Delhi for the G20 Leaders’ Summit.
India, as the host nation this year, sees the summit as an opportunity to showcase its global leadership capabilities.
Despite increasing global tensions, PM Modi aims to ensure that the summit concludes with enough consensus to produce a joint communiqué or Leaders’ Declaration.
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s absence from the summit is noteworthy, indicating strained relations between China and India, stemming from an unresolved territorial dispute and India’s growing ties with the U.S. Xi’s decision not to attend may be linked to his focus on broader strategic visions or diplomatic strategy.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is also skipping the summit, potentially to avoid international scrutiny over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This absence complicates efforts to produce a joint declaration, as Russia insists on its position regarding Ukraine.
India aims to emphasize the concerns of the Global South during its G20 presidency, focusing on climate issues, gender empowerment, inclusive economic growth, and digital infrastructure development. India has invited nine guest countries and proposed permanent membership for the African Union, aiming to address the concerns of developing nations within the G20 framework.
