Australia’s upcoming Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre in Victoria, is innovatively involving the traditional landowners in the naming and design process. The centre aims to integrate the cultural heritage, values, and knowledge of the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners into its structure and surroundings. The construction is set to commence shortly and is scheduled for completion in 2026.
The venue will cater to a wide array of events, including corporate functions, sports events, entertainment shows, music festivals, trade expos, and public exhibitions. The comprehensive layout includes a 1000-seat auditorium, expansive exhibition spaces, conference rooms, adaptable event areas, as well as eateries and retail outlets. Additionally, a Crowne Plaza branded 200-room hotel will be part of the complex.
The project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities and contribute to economic growth in the City of Greater Geelong. It also anticipates providing 600 jobs during construction and around 270 permanent positions upon its operational launch.
The Wadawurrung Traditional Owners are deeply involved in the process, contributing their linguistic and cultural insights. This cooperative approach is geared towards honouring indigenous heritage and incorporating First Nations perspectives throughout the centre’s branding and operational strategies.
