The international energy situation has witnessed a fluctuating trend due to several factors, leading to market instability and escalating prices. The global resumption of economic activities after the pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and reduced investment in fossil fuels have contributed to this crisis. Though energy prices have decreased since their spike in 2022, the market remains vulnerable to more disruptions and price hikes. The consequences of increasing energy prices will lead to higher costs for various economic activities.
Further, soaring energy prices negatively impact the global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve carbon neutrality, causing some nations to depend on coal power generators, which are against carbon neutrality goals. The current energy crisis has also presented an opportunity to expedite the shift towards non-fossil fuel energy sources, for instance, renewable energy, and improve energy efficiency.
The upcoming Knowledge Forum will discuss how to reconcile energy security, carbon neutrality, and development cooperation, along with the private sector’s involvement. Professor Kikkawa Takeo of the International University of Japan, an expert in energy, will provide a keynote speech, followed by a panel discussion with Ms. Morishita Maiko from the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies and the Climate Bonds Initiative, and JICA Ogata Research Institute Executive Senior Research Fellow Sato Ichiro. They will exchange their views on the energy crisis and climate change and how to seize the crisis as an opportunity for energy transformation.
