Geneva – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported robust growth in passenger traffic demand for April. Global total traffic in April 2023, measured in revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs), surged by 45.8% compared to the same period in 2022. Impressively, global traffic has now reached 90.5% of pre-Covid levels, indicating a strong recovery for the industry. The industry load factor stood at 81.3%, just 1.8 percentage points below pre-pandemic levels.
Domestic traffic experienced a remarkable rebound, with a 42.6% increase compared to the year-ago period, surpassing even the April 2019 results with a 2.9% growth.
International traffic witnessed substantial growth, rising by 48.0% compared to April 2022. All markets demonstrated healthy expansion, with carriers in the Asia-Pacific region leading the recovery. International RPKs reached an impressive 83.6% of April 2019 levels.
Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, expressed optimism about the industry’s performance. He noted that the strong traffic trend observed in the first quarter of 2023 continued in April, attributing it to easing inflation, rising consumer confidence in most OECD countries, and declining jet fuel prices. These factors point towards sustained strong air travel demand and a moderation of cost pressures.
